Rabun County - Country No More
Posted by sadmin on Sunday, September 09 @ 19:48:08 EDT (771 reads)
Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Assortment of Fast Food Chains . Horrible traffic, the rudest most self absorbed people coming from Atlanta and surrounding areas, with their bratty kids, and their let me show you how much monies I have attitude .
It doesn't help when you live next to a rental home either, its kind of a look into the future for the area, and what kind of neighbors you can expect to have . My advice to you older folks looking for a place to retire, skip this county, its just going to get worse from here on out .
Finally an updated list of dining places to AVOID and places to GO TO :
AVOID :
Dillard House (Dillard) - Like cold food ? I didn't think so .
The Cupboard Cafe (Dillard) - One out of every 10 times might be good, so not worth it .
Pazzo Pizzeria (Lake Burton) - Was fantastic in 2005, 2006/2007 something changed, its awful now .
Mama G's (Clayton) (Pizzas) - Can a place be worse than Pizza Hut AND make you sick ? Yep !
Motor Company Grill (Franklin, NC) - New Owners apparently, Same Bland Food, EL SKIP-O .
Mama's Country Kitchen (Clayton) - Can't be considered Country when it tastes like Fast Food .
Spring Ridge Creamery (Otto, NC) - Small portions for a high price . They used to give you what you paid for, not anymore .
GO TO :
Miss Meg's Bakery (Clayton) - Wonderfully delicious Burgers, had them at least 10 times, so its no fluke .
Canzone Pizzeria (Dillard) - Great pizza, nothing else around here comes close .

For those that are unaware, there is a proposed Interstate (I-3) that could see its way through our beautiful county . I thought it would be good to help spread the word of this catastrophe in the making .
Please read this story at The Clayton Tribune website for more information .

Proposed Interstate could go through Rabun County
Posted by sadmin on Tuesday, July 27 @ 12:54:11 EDT (770 reads)
sadmin07 writes "A proposed Interstate (I-3) could possibly go through parts of the county according to an OnlineAthens article . The map provided at the site, doesn't make it entirerly clear if the county is affected, but it looks awfully close . I sure hope this legislation gets killed not only for us, but for the folks in Towns County as well .

Food & Alltel
Posted by sadmin on Saturday, June 12 @ 21:20:06 EDT (812 reads)
sadmin07 writes "It has been quite a while since our last update, but here is something I was thinking of posting for awhile : A list of good restaurants in the area . We don't have any vested interest in these establishments other than having had some great food there . So with that said, here is our list of good place to eat in the area :
- 1: The Cupboard - 441 North Dillard, GA - Nice selection of southern style cooking . Their lemon chicken is fantastic .
- 2: Springridge Creamery - 441 North, Otto, NC, about a mile past the NC state line - The best home made Ice Cream we've had in the area .
- 3: Huddle House - 441 South, Clayton GA - We've always had good meals here .
- 4: Dairy Queen - 441 South, Franklin, NC - The best DQ in the area hands down .
Also a little update on the Alltel DSL situation I spoke of in the previous story - its still not fixed and its been three months now . They also closed the Alltel office in Clayton for some reason . This is really going to hurt the elderly who relied on this place to pay their bills. Shame on Alltel .

Alltel DSL, Better hold off on that order !
Posted by sadmin on Saturday, March 20 @ 21:30:20 EST (803 reads)
sadmin07 writes "Over the last month or so we have been having problems with Alltel's DSL Internet service. Namely, the download speeds have gone WAY down. This seems to have coincided with the 1.5mbit upgrades they have done in Rabun Gap. Last night, the speeds were in the 8 kB sec or less range and the latency increased web page loading time to the point that it would stall out.
I don't want to get too technical to bore ya'll, but trust me when I say that is VERY slow for a DSL line, barely faster than a regular dialup modem . We believe we have begun tracking the problem -- Not enough bandwidth from the remote terminal to the central office for the amount of users that are using the Sylvan Lake Falls RT . Now I tried to e-mail them about this issue, but got a reponse basically telling me we don't care about you or your service, so I figure we'll have to place many calls to them to get anything done . We really need more DSL competition in Rabun County as Alltel seems to not really give a hoot .
A fellow DSL subsriber and I performed a test yesterday to guage Alltel DSL efficency. Although certainly not scientific - it certainly was very revealing about potential infrastructure issues Alltel is encountering.
User A began a download session from Microsoft.com of a high definition video sample. The file was 120 Meg in size, and software was used that allowed the download to be paused mid-stream. User B began a download from a commercial News server.
User A experienced a 20% drop in transfer rate at the moment User B began his transfer.
User A paused his transfer and User B transfer rate jumped a whopping 90%
User A un-paused his transfer - and User B transfer rate nose-dived back down to the 13kb/s range.
What is wrong with this picuture ? This is how Cable Modems work. With shared bandwidth - if you have a single user saturating the line - other users would be impacted with slow/no-load web browsing. With DSL, each subscriber gets a dedicated amount of bandwidth - in this case 1.5Mb/768kb. These recent Alltel DSL Internet issues seem to point to Alltel grossly over selling their available pipe to the Internet. Yes - they can connect people to their CO/RemotCO's as the advertised speeds - but with all the recent customer additions - has Alltel upgraded it's link to the Internet ? This question remains to be answered by Alltel. "

Rabun County News: Surprise!
Posted by sadmin on Thursday, February 26 @ 23:46:04 EST (732 reads)
sadmin07 writes "Well, they said it would come, and this time they were right. Snow blanketed Rabun County Thursday morning, catching even some outdoor residents by surprise.

Fox5 television station sent a crew up Wednesday evening to scout the area - and the station provided coverage of Rabun County's snow fall amounts late into Thursday night.
A team of television trucks complete with on-air talent made their way to the Clayton Waffle House before nightfall Wednesday night Feb 24, 2004. For the most part, Rabun County's main roads remained clear and passable.
